C's Journey

C’s DTKAFO/Cunningham Clubfoot Brace Journey

July 7, 2017

We went through the typical Ponsetti routine starting at 8 weeks. My daughter is hyperflexible and hypotonic, due to her Trisomy 21 (Down's Syndrome). Once she started moving in the night I became concerned about the boots and bar adding unnecessary torque and pressure on her knees and hips and started searching for alternative methods. We are headed home from Maine later today with our DTKAFO from Cunningham Prosthetic Care. When we arrived I learned that my gut feeling was correct and her foot was either not fully corrected or slightly relapsing- either way not quite as mobile as it should be. After just one day in the brace there is a slight difference in her foot mobility and I'm so excited and relieved. Mostly I'm ecstatic about not sleeping in boots and bar anymore!

Update October 18, 2017

Great news today! We've been using the Cunningham DTKAFO for 3.5 months and her range of motion has improved by 15 degrees AND, what I'm most excited about, is that her heel bone has dropped down into it's correct place. The Ortho (who doesn't necessarily support the use of an alternate brace) said her foot looks excellent; there was only one minor concern that is common and 80% of children naturally grow out of. šŸ’•šŸ’•

Jerald the orthotist who designed, fabricates and fits the brace, told me how the brace aligns everything and let's the bone just drop down into place, it sounded amazing. The Ortho was a bit confused why I kept asking her to repeat it lol, I first said- so you're saying it's moved a little down closer to the other foot? And she was like, no, its right where it should be

  1. Hi. Our son has clubfoot as well. Just finish casting and surgery. Now on to the bracing. We know he wont tolerate the traditional brace and bar. Looking into Cunningham brace. Are you willing to talk with us about your experience?
